I've been reading a book about this and it's an utterly difficult read, taking me forever because the story is difficult and it depicts the love between Anna and Nils. He wrote her letters and the book has letters and the diary entries. Whatever of it is saved of course. I think the book is the most recent in these developments and what is clear from reading it are three things: 1) They were prepared, but not prepared, because they're trekking and their feet get wet and cold. 2) All the diary entries show the exhaustion and the treacherous hiking conditions and wild animals. 3) They had not thought out how to transport their food and necessary provisions and keep leaving stuff behind the whole time. You covered this topic and now I need to find and finish the book. Am at the stage where the author kind of works out the diary entries as they've been damaged and some if it is there and some if you have to assume. But the fact that Nils writes letters to Anna in this time, is just proof to show how much he held her in his thoughts. I didn't know the bit about Anna's heart. That just threw me. Thank you for bringing it to my awareness again. I've also read in the Swedish press that they think they died of Polar bear attacks not from parasites or carbon monoxide asphyxiation.
Which book is it, out of interest? “The Ice Balloon”? Interesting that it could be polar bear injuries! And yeah, the whole thing is just utterly heartbreaking
It’s in Swedish. Translated to the expedition: My love story…. I tried adding a copy of cover but not sure this link is working it’s not my website… Also I wonder if it is this one in English. The one I know is with an orange cover, but there’s a link to some English text which I include here. None of this are mine so if you want to not have other links delete as appropriate. https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/The_Expedition/c7CfEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1 (this is the English link, the other one disappeared).
That was a helluva story and completely new to me. Thank you. Having spent time mountain and rock climbing (thousands of years ago when I was young), I'm familiar with the line between courage and folly. But the part of Anna waiting 13 years for her true love is a consummate depiction of the line between courage and folly. 13 years waiting! I'm not sure what to admire more.
I am sure her husband was thrilled about the heart thing.
Apparently he tried to help her forget... and he died after her.

Bea Uusma - Expeditionen: min kärlekshistoria

Thanks!
Do you know the book? Have you come across it in your research?
No I haven’t actually, I mostly used the English language book “The Ice Balloon”, which was really good
Not heard of that one. I think Uusma’s book is written slightly later.

What an incredible tale, really sparks the imagination. And to think this is a true story…!
Utterly fascinating! Thank you for sharing this!
