Venice is like being in a dream.

Thank you for the photos.

I agree. Venice is a state of mind, and except for the 300 days a year when the hordes of tourists overflow Venice, solace can be found among the fog that often envelopes Venice in the winter and when acqua alta thins out the crowds in late fall. I will continue, though, to always think of Venice as La Serenissima.

We rented an apt. twice for 3 weeks each time and pretended to be Venetians. It was wonderful. I bought food and cooked local recipes.

Heartily agree! It’s still yours first thing in the morning and late at night.

Thanks for sharing your photos, they’re wonderful. I’ve had similar suspicions about Venice but my wife is adamant we must go someday. No doubt we will.

Venice is Venice is Venice is Venice … that it still functions is just short of a miracle … it more a way of life than a mere place …

Last time I visited Venice was in 1998 as part of our honeymoon.

The one thing I learnt was that Venice is a surprisingly and Ironically dull place.....when it's pouring with rain!

when you tell people that the photos are taken on film mentioning the film type is probably more important that the make of the camera. it's good to see that you finally show us some results from that camera, lovely photos.

I had the same experience. Despite everything that should make it unbearable, it is absolutely charming.

I have not yet been to Venice, but it captured my imagination long ago. Thanks for those photos - it may be the nudge I need.

What lovely pictures!

I have to agree that the food is terrible. Probably the only place in all of Italy where I have not been satisfied with the gastronomy.

... and yet a really beautiful city.

I went there for the first time in Feb in the 1980s during Carnaval. It was absolutely magical in spite of the crowds. Went back 2 years ago in the summer and I used the same 1980s French "hitchhiker's travel guide" (le guide du Routard in French) to find a good restaurant. It was still there, and still very good!

I have had wonderful meals there. Sad for you.

It could always be that I didn't pick up the right places, but in general that's not something I worry about when in Italy (even an average restaurant is great).

When I visited in 2018, I felt the city had a melancholy beauty perhaps, in part, because it sinks a little more into the lagoon every year.

It is magical and foggy, I guess being a city on water should have occurred to me that it would be foggy often. Definitely an experience to see in person.

standing in St Mark's Square is humbling... like virtually all of Italy, ancient wisdom, ancient conflict and ancient beauty is palpable.

My overall experience as well. One of the favourite readings of my youth was about the youth of Marco Polo in Venice. The first book ended with the return of Niccolo and Matteo from their first trip to China.

When I first went there, I went with an attitude. I told to myself that it cannot possibly live up to my expectations and the hype.

Then it blew me away. Completely and totally.

I had exactly the same experience (expecting the worst) with Hawaii. Another place that cannot be praised enough.

Jerusalem is also magic, but there, I went without expectations.

Your pictures are great.
